Dean,
Faculty of Textile Science and Technology
March 2010
One of the objectives of the first phase of the Faculty of Textile Science and Technology’s mid-term plan is the establishment of a textile resource center or a textile museum. Our goal has finally been realized, albeit in the form of a digital archive, during the final year of the proposed plan. We are also planning to open a resource center within the fiscal year by restoring the cocoon storage building, built with historical brick construction.
The digital archive was established with expectations even higher than those for a resource center or a museum in a large scale building.
- Collect or offer access via links to valuable reference materials in the field of textile science and technology from around the world
- Build a comprehensive collection of technical information about the details of all textile construction as a whole
- Include detailed information about textile related technologies (threads, weaving, dying, etc.) of historical significance to the extent one can hope for at the time
- Accumulate as much information on the latest technologies in order to command a view of the future of textile science and fiber engineering, which embraces all aspects of the essential human needs from life science to psychology, and a view of industry and society which will make that future possible.
It must be thrilling to have a panoramic view of textile technology or fiber engineering from the perspective of the history of mankind. The new archive has features to achieve this goal. It will not be possible, however, to achieve the goal immediately. The opening is just the beginning of a long journey. Nevertheless, I sincerely hope that these efforts will make it possible to hand down past technologies, provide milestones towards the future, and present a new role of science and technology in enhancing living standards. We will continue working hard to make it a world-class digital archive for fiber engineering, with the support of all the site's visitors. I hope I can count on your continued support.
